Some mornings, there is nothing I want more than a Bloody Mary. This never used to be the case, but then my friend Paige and I started going to the occasional brunch together. More often than not, she’d request a Bloody Mary from the bartender, specifying extra spicy. Always easily influenced by friends’ tastes, sooner or later I found myself craving the savory cocktail, particularly after a night of drinking.
Finding most pre-made mixes contain high FODMAP ingredients, I decided the best way to satisfy my craving was to make my own Bloody Mary Mix. It’s actually surprisingly easy to make, containing ingredients that are a breeze to find in any supermarket. This particular mix is robust in flavor and heavy on the spice, but gets its punch without any onion or garlic. Needless to say, it’s everything I look for in a Bloody Mary cocktail.
It’s All About the Garnish
While this is totally up to your personal preference, I find the right garnish can go a long way with a Bloody Mary. Some notorious bars go all out, layering everything from sliders to chicken wings on top of the glass. Other bars simply grab what’s available – a wilting piece of celery stick or a wedge of lemon. I like a garnish that is hearty enough to munch on with your drink, but not so overwhelming that it takes the place of your meal. For me, that means a piece of celery, a couple of olives, a wedge of citrus to add a little extra tart, and if I’m lucky, a pickle spear. Nothing extravagant, but just enough to pretty up the drink in a practical, edible way.
Feel free to garnish as much (or as little) as you like. If setting up for a brunch, you can even make a little garnish “fixin’s bar” and let people add what they prefer. Super easy, right?
Whisk up a batch of Homemade Bloody Mary Mix to share whenever you have your friends together – be it an upcoming Galantine’s Day Brunch or a birthday breakfast – and introduce them to a delicious, savory way to celebrate. For more wonderful brunch recipes, click here for a list from the archives!
